International Rubber Conference Holds in Buea

From September 17-18, 2015, the government of Cameroon organised the International Rubber Conference at the Buea Mountain Hotel. The conference was opened by the representative of the Minister of External Relations, Mr Bernard Okalia Bilai who doubles as the Governor of the South West Region. Being the major beneficiary of the conference, the Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) had 25 participants including the General Manager, Mr Franklin Ngoni Njie, the Director of Human Resources, the Group Rubber Manager and all Rubber Estate Managers. In his keynote address, the Secretary General of the International Rubber Research Development Board (IRRDB), Dr Abdul Aziz Kadir said “Cameroon has a huge rubber potential”. He added that “ten million hectares of rubber are presently planted across the world. Cameroon can copy from Malaysia where 80% of the country’s furniture is produced from rubber”.

On a Day Two of the workshop, there was a field trip to plantations of the CDC. This included a guided tour of the Sonne/Likomba Nursery and the Tiko Central Rubber Factory. The day ended with the CDC offering participants the opportunity to savour Cameroonian cuisine in the beautiful setting of the Buea Mountain Hotel.

The international workshop ended on a light note on Saturday September 19, 2015 with the CDC offering all participants a guided visit to Bakingili and the Limbe Botanic Garden. The corporation offered its guests a taste of its hospitality with lunch at one of her seaside residences in Bota Limbe. Before leaving Cameroon, the Secretary General of IRRDB announced that the CDC will be given two places in the upcoming rubber workshop in Vietnam. A gentleman’s agreement was also reached between the Secretary General of IRRDB, Dr Aziz and the General Manager of the CDC, Mr Franklin Ngoni Njie for IRRDB experts to visit the CDC whenever the need arises for training.
